In August 1914, 4th Middlesex, a regular battalion of the British Army,  had arrived in France as part of 8 Brigade, 3rd Division, but in November, 1915, in order to bring some experienced units to the newly arrived volunteer divisions, they were transferred to 63 Brigade, 21st Division. For the next 4 months they were to be found in the Armentières sector, with spells in the front line, support trenches and at rest, although because of the demands of work parties and carrying duties, bringing up supplies to the men in the front line trenches at night, the rest period was often anything but restful. During this 4 month period they had 180 casualties of whom 33 died, including William Vause who died of wounds on 2nd February, 1916. The Battalion History does not reveal anymore information but 60% of casualties on the Western Front were as a result of shell fire so it is likely this is how he met his death.
